{"id":343,"date":"2024-06-05T13:11:41","date_gmt":"2024-06-05T13:11:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mtsu.edu\/career\/?page_id=343"},"modified":"2026-05-05T06:11:24","modified_gmt":"2026-05-05T06:11:24","slug":"employerpolicy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.mtsu.edu\/career\/employerpolicy\/","title":{"rendered":"Policy and Procedures"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Employer Terms of Use<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Employers recruiting through the Career Development Center should adhere to the principles set forth by the&nbsp;<strong>National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE)<\/strong>&nbsp;regarding&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.naceweb.org\/career-development\/organizational-structure\/principles-for-professional-practice\/#employment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">professional standards and ethical conduct<\/a>. Recruiting activities that appear to discriminate against applicants on the basis of race, color, sex, religion, creed, age, national origin, veteran status, sexual orientation, disability, or gender will not be permitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to the increasing number of fraudulent positions, phishing scams, and questionable employment opportunities, the Career Development Center staff reviews every employer and position before posting to students. Although we cannot guarantee the integrity of every position, we take every effort to not only protect students, but also the reputations of our employers who are also victims of fraudulent activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-mtsu-blocks-expandable-block accordion expandable-group expandable-group-lightblock\" id=\"newExpandable\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-mtsu-blocks-expandable-item accordion-item expandable-heading expandable-heading-lightblock\"><h2 class=\"accordion-header\" id=\"headinghandshake-posting-policy\"><button class=\"accordion-button collapsed\" type=\"button\" data-bs-toggle=\"collapse\" data-bs-target=\"#collapsenewExpandablehandshake-posting-policy\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"collapsenewExpandablehandshake-posting-policy\">Handshake\u00a0Posting Policy<\/button><\/h2><div id=\"collapsenewExpandablehandshake-posting-policy\" class=\"accordion-collapse collapse expandable-content expandable-content-lightblock\" aria-labelledby=\"headinghandshake-posting-policy\" data-bs-parent=\"#newExpandable\"><div class=\"accordion-body\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conditions for Posting:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"is-style-compact-list wp-block-list\">\n<li>Provide a&nbsp;<strong>physical, commercial address<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>valid URL<\/strong>, and a complete&nbsp;<strong>organization description<\/strong>&nbsp;(social media links are helpful, but not required).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Specific contact individual<\/strong>&nbsp;named, including email address. If email address does not match the domain name of the organization\u2019s website, the individual should contact the Recruiting Coordinator at&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:career@mtsu.edu\">career@mtsu.edu<\/a>&nbsp;before posting to explain.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Postings will include a&nbsp;<strong>clear and concise description<\/strong>&nbsp;of the available position.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Third party recruiters must&nbsp;<strong>disclose the hiring client name<\/strong>&nbsp;in the position title to be considered for approval.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For current students, employers must have an&nbsp;<strong>\u201cemployer-employee\u201d relationship<\/strong>&nbsp;for W-2 paid positions and have no required fees, other than professional licensure fees for career employees.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1099 independent contractor<\/strong>&nbsp;positions are eligible for posting on Handshake only for experienced graduates (3+ years) and&nbsp;<strong>must include the following disclaimer<\/strong>&nbsp;in the posting: \u201cThis is a 1099 position. Persons paid on a 1099 basis are independent contractors and are self-employed. Independent contractors are required to pay all self-employment taxes (Social Security &amp; Medicare) as well as income tax. Independent contractors generally do not receive any type of employment benefits from the client. For more information please refer to&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.irs.gov\/\">irs.gov<\/a>&nbsp;or talk with a tax professional.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">We Allow the Following Types of Positions:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"is-style-compact-list wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Internships<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 employer supervised positions preparing students for a professional career track.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Part-time jobs<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211;&nbsp;for currently enrolled students to help offset educational and living expenses. The objective is to connect students with employers who offer jobs that are flexible and can accommodate students\u2019 class schedules.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Full-time Jobs<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Types of Opportunities Not Allowed:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"is-style-compact-list wp-block-list\">\n<li>In-home services at private residences such as tutoring, cleaning, personal care or yard work<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Home-based businesses without a commercial location<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Multi-level marketing\/sales; any business opportunity requiring an investment or charging a fee or soliciting business from 91大神 students<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Positions from other job boards or web sites<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Commission only internships<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Internships that appear to be self-directed or without supervision<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Door-to-door or commission-only sales positions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Third-party positions where the employer is not specified<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Internships:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Internship postings should meet the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.naceweb.org\/advocacy\/position-statements\/united-states-internships.aspx?intlftnav\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NACE definition and criteria for internships<\/a>&nbsp;and adhere to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/agencies\/whd\/fact-sheets\/71-flsa-internships\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Department of Labor\u2019s Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)<\/a>. This includes the internship being an extension of classroom learning in which a student would be eligible to receive academic credit. These criteria must be met for any unpaid internship with a for-profit institution, and we reserve the right to refuse postings we believe are not in the best interests of our students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Direct Referrals:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>We strive to maintain the most fair and equitable recruiting practices.
